Health and Homeopathy Therapy
Homeopathy is a low cost, non-toxic system of alternative health medicine used by hundreds of millions of people worldwide. It is particularly effective at treating chronic illnesses that fail to respond to conventional treatment and is also a superb method of self care for minor health conditions.
The word “homeopathy” comes from the Greek word homoios meaning “similar” and pathos meaning “suffering”. Homeopathic remedies are dilutions of natural substances from plants, minerals and animals.
Based on the principle of “like cures like”, these remedies match different symptom patterns or “profiles” of illness and act to stimulate to body’s natural healing response.
Throughout the past 200 years of its existence, homeopathy has proved to be effective in treating diseases for which conventional medicine has little to offer.
Homeopathy, however, has been continually attacked by the medical establishment; it costs so little compared to drug treatments, and therefore threatens pharmaceutical profits. It also works very differently from traditional medicine.
Homeopathy is practiced world wide.
However, homeopathy is practiced around the world, with an estimated 500 million people receiving homeopathic treatment. In fact, The World Health Organization has cited homeopathy as one of the systems of traditional medicine that should be integrated worldwide to provide global health care in the 21st century.
In Europe homeopathy is far more recognized as a therapy than in the United States. In Germany, where it was founded, it is required training for medical students and used by 20 percent of physicians.
In France, all pharmacies carry homeopathic medicines along with conventional drugs and in the UK, homeopathic hospitals and outpatient clinics are part of the National Health system, and it has enjoyed the patronage of six generations of the British Royal family.
Homeopathy is also widely practiced in India, where over 25,000 doctors use it, as well as Mexico, Argentina and Brazil.
How does Homeopathy work?
Homeopathy was founded by the celebrated German Physician Samuel Hahnemann. Dr. Hahnemann’s theory was that a substance in large doses produces symptoms of an illness, but the same substance in very minute doses cures it. Therefore, a smaller dose of a substance that caused disease could stimulate the body to fight the disease.
His theory was borne out by years of experiments with hundreds of substances that produced similar results. Based on this work he founded the idea and principles of homeopathy.
The Principles of Homeopathy
Like Cures Like
Dr Hahnemann referred to this phenomenon as the Law of Similars, a principle recognized in the fourth century. This law is also the theory behind vaccines of physicians, who “immunize” the body with minute traces of a disease like a virus, to strengthen the immune response to the actual disease. Allergies are treated in a similar way by introducing minute quantities of the allergen into the body to boost tolerance.
The more dilute the remedy, the greater the potency
Most people believe that the higher the dose of a medicine, the greater the effect. However, the opposite is true in homeopathy. Dr Hahnemann discovered this Law by experimenting with higher and higher dilutions of substances to avoid toxic side effects.
Homeopathic remedies are usually prepared through a process of diluting with pure water or alcohol. They can be diluted to such an extent that literally no molecules of the original substance remain. Yet, the more dilute it gets, the more potent it becomes.
This phenomenon has held great fascination among practitioners and researchers (as well as earning criticism by the medical profession). The explanation of this therapeutic action on such high dilutions appears to lie in the field of quantum physics and the emerging field of energy medicine.
Despite no molecules remaining of the original substance in a remedy, a study using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) conducted at Harvard University, demonstrated distinctive readings of subatomic activity in 23 homeopathic remedies, and gave off measurable electromagnetic signals.
This study means that far from “nothing” remaining in the homeopathic remedies, a remedy may be sending an electromagnetic “message” to the body that matches the frequency or pattern of an illness to stimulate the body’s natural healing.
Illness is specific to the individual
A session with a homeopathic practitioner is a unique experience for someone used to conventional medicine. For instance you may suffer from headaches or migraines. The conventional treatment for this is the same for almost everyone, but homeopathy recognizes over 200 symptom patterns associated with headaches and has a remedy for each one.
The first task of a practitioner is a process called “profiling” or recording all of the qualities – physical, mental and emotional, of the patient that will determine the patient’s remedy or combination of remedies. Practitioners of classical homeopathy consult vast compendiums (called repertories) to determine the remedy that closely matches the total picture of the symptoms.
In the case of a headache, this picture may be: whether it is in front or back of the head, gets worse with a cold sensation and improve with heat, it may be better whilst lying down or worse standing up, you may be thin and easily excited, or a docile type.
The Healing Crisis
In homeopathy, the process of healing begins by eliminating the immediate symptoms, then progressing to the “older” underlying symptoms. Many of these “layers” are residues of fevers, trauma, or chronic disease that were unsuccessfully treated or suppressed by conventional medicine.
As the stages of homeopathic healing progresses, the patient may get worse before getting better. This is often referred to as the “healing crisis”. The theory is that healing progresses from the deepest part of the body to the extremities; from the emotional and mental aspects to the physical; and from the upper part of the body to the lower parts of the body.
Homeopaths also state that healing progresses in reverse order, from the most recent illness and diseases to the oldest. In this way homeopaths are able to track the progress of their treatment and restore a patient’s health layer by layer.
Conditions benefited by Homeopathy
Homeopathy is a complete system of natural medicine that can have a therapeutic effect on almost any disease or health condition. It can reverse diseases such as diabetes, arthritis, asthma, epilepsy, skin eruptions, allergic conditions, mental or emotional disorders, especially if it is applied at the onset of the disease.
The long term benefit to the patient is that it alleviates the symptoms and re-establishes health at the deepest levels and therefore achieves a lasting cure. Homeopathy has also been successful in treating viruses, fatigue, irritability, pre-menstrual problems, neck stiffness, low back pain, and digestive problems like bloating.
Clinical studies are now supporting the effectiveness of homeopathic remedies, including rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, Parkinson ’s disease, flu symptoms and even as an aid in childbirth, shortening the time of labour by around 3 hours.
