Reflexology and Reiki for Health
Reflexology is used for health by reflex areas on the feet that correspond to every part of the body, including organs and glands, and these parts can be affected by stimulating the appropriate reflex areas. Reflexology is used to relieve stress and tension, improve blood supply and unblock nerve impulses to balance the whole body.
Reflexology evolved out of an earlier European system known as zone therapy where it was discovered that numbness could be induced by finger pressure. Certain symptoms could also be alleviated by applying finger pressure to specific points on the hands and mouth.
A physiotherapist, named Eunice Ingham was inspired by this work, and developed this as the basis for what is known today as reflexology. Ingham mapped organ reflexes on the feet and developed techniques for inducing a stimulating, healing effect in those areas.
How does it work?
Reflexologists apply precise pressure to release blockages that inhibit the flow of energy and cause pain and disease. The pressure is believed to affect internal organs and glands by stimulating reflex points on the body.
Practitioners often target the break-up of lactic acid and calcium crystals accumulated around the 7,200 nerve endings in each foot. This is perhaps why we feel so much better when our feet are treated. Nerve endings on the feet have extensive connection through the spinal cord and brain to all areas of the body.
Even though reflexology is medically unproven, it is believed that it still deserves to be widely used as a valuable therapy to the health and medical care of patients in need.
Studies into the effects of reflexology
Modern practitioners of reflexology often witness startling effects from their treatments. A study was conducted of the effects of reflexology in alleviating pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS).
Results found that there was a 62 percent reduction in PMS symptoms from women undergoing reflexology treatment. It is also useful to treat other health problems such as hypertension, anxiety or painful conditions in the body.
Another study examined the use of reflexology in patients suffering from breast or lung cancer. All of the patients were also receiving medications. After 30 minutes treatment from a certified reflexologist, researchers observed that all patients experienced a significant reduction in anxiety and pain.
Another study has found that reflexology can be effective for treating chronic migraines and tension headache. In the study, 220 patients who suffered from frequent headaches and migraines received treatments for up to six months. A follow up survey of the patients three months later found that 81 percent were helped by the treatments or were completely cured.
Health and Reiki
Reiki means “the free passage of universal life energy”. Reiki involves the transference of energy between Reiki practitioners and their clients in order to restore harmony and boost the body’s healing processes.
Reiki practitioners claim that its principles claim that its principles evolved from ancient Tibetan Buddhist healing practices that were transmitted from teacher to disciple. Dr. Mika Usui, a Japanese scholar and Christian minister, is said to have rediscovered these principles in the late 1800s. One of his pupils Saichi Takata, then introduced Reiki to the U.S in 1937.
How does it Work?
Prior to becoming a practitioner, Reiki students undergo a number of training levels in which they are initiated by a “Reiki master” and attuned to healing symbols that are then focused upon as they send healing energy to their clients.
Although Reiki has not received the same degree of scientific study as therapeutic massage and reflexology, evidence of its success as a therapy does exist. There is a published study on the use of Reiki to manage pain. The study involved volunteers who were experiencing pain for a number of reasons including cancer and all were on medication for pain relief.
When Reiki treatments were being administered by a second-degree Reiki therapist there was a significant reduction in pain following treatment.
Reiki treatments vary according to individual need and are usually administered with clients lying down as the practitioner places their hands on various areas of the body. Reiki has become quite popular as a form of bio-energetic healing, and worldwide there are an estimated 200,000 Reiki healers.
