Vitamin B17 - Health Information
Taking B17 for health either in the form of tablets (known as amygdalin) or by chewing apricot kernels is not a magic formula to cancel out the cancer risk of an unhealthy lifestyle. Rather it is an essential part of a balanced diet program both to prevent, and treat cancer.
Dr Ernst T Krebs Jr., the biochemist who discovered B17, said that if a normal healthy adult were to eat around 10-12 apricot kernels a day for life, they would be unlikely to get cancer. I tend to think of B17 as a form of natural chemotherapy
The Food Standards Agency have recently issued a warning about eating the kernels to excess due to their tiny cyanide content and recommend no more than two a day, saying they could be lethal in high doses. B17 has been banned in both The USA and Australia for this reason.
However what they do not mention is that the type of cyanide that apricots (and for that matter foods like apple pips, blackberries and macadamia nuts) contain are rendered harmless by the human body when it comes into contact with healthy cells. What is DOES do is to kill off unhealthy cells, making it particularly good for cancer sufferers.
I feel it is taking risk assessment to the extreme to suggest such a small amount. I can confidently say that I was eating up to 50 kernels a day with no ill effects for several months, then 35 a day for a further four months, and at the same time I was also taking amygdalin tablets - a concentrated form of B17 or Laetrile.
B17 can be taken at the rate of 10-12 a day for years with no ill effects, which is the preventative dose, and I have been taking B17 for three years far in excess of what the Food Standards Agency recommends and I intend to keep taking them for as long as I am able to.
I have also recommended them for many people far in excess of the FSA recommendations. I know many people who take them regularly in doses of at least 10 a day or more. The only side effect they have experienced is that their general health and wellbeing has improved since taking them, so the safety of taking them is in no doubt.
If you in any doubt please read my journey to health which tells the story of how my health progressed under my diet regime following my diagnosis.
The FSA is not always a reliable source of advice. They uphold the RDAs (recommended daily allowances) even though these amounts are only just enough to prevent deficiencies let alone achieve better health!
And they restricted the use of folic acid to prescription only in tiny amounts of 0.1mg when it had already been proved in 1974 that larger amounts prevented birth defects in pregnancy. Only now are they encouraging its addition to bread.
I agree it has to be cautious where no clinical trials have taken place. However they are not likely to take place with regard to apricot kernels because there is no money to be made from food sources that cannot be patented.
I recommend if you start taking apricot kernels by chewing 1 or 2 at a time twice a day. Build that up gradually to ten kernels a day – eating no more than 5 at any one time. If you find they are too bitter you may want to try chewing a dried apricot or a fig at the same time to disguise the bitter taste. When you experience a “marzipan” taste you are getting pure B17.
As a preventative you should take 10 kernels a day, as a treatment 30-40 per day (under supervision) taken with food. The maximum should be 50 a day. The reason that it should be limited is that in large doses it can lower blood pressure and sometimes has the effect of making you feel a bit light headed. Kernels should be chewed and not swallowed whole, and no more than 5 at a time, with at least an hour in between doses
Anyone already suffering from low blood pressure should proceed with caution when taking apricot kernels
If amygdalin tablets are taken as well as kernels they should not be taken at the same time, as this would be too much vitamin for the body to process at any one time, and may make you feel nauseous
In any case amygdalin is only available from a small number of sources (see link below) as they are imported from Mexico and not allowed to be on open sale in health food shops. They should also be taken as part of a healthy whole food diet as detailed here and only under supervision of a qualified nutritional therapist
It is very important to drink plenty of water – at least 2 litres a day when taking the maximum doses to assist in the flushing out of toxins accumulated in the liver.
